Habibi, which translates to “my love” in Arabic, is a band of all-female garage rockers out of Brooklyn that formed in the spring months of 2011. With a shared love for Middle Eastern Culture, punk, motown and garage rock, members Erin Campbell, Rahill Jamalifard, Lenny Lynch and Karen Vasquez cross the sounds of bands like The Shangri-Las and The Ramones and The Marvelettes with Eastern-tinged melodies and mystical lyrics that sound like they were recorded in ’60s Detroit. There’s even some songs which feature Jamalifard singing in her native language, Farsi. It’s deep and it’s out now on Burger Records.

Video: Golden Animals – ” All Your Life”

golden-animals-here-eye-go

Since forming in 2006, longtime friends Tommy Eisner and Linda Beecroft—together known as Golden Animals—have split time between their gritty Brooklyn abode and the sun-soaked lands of the California desert. Crafting songs that draw on inspirations from both of their homes—love, friendship, seclusion—they view their two bases as complementary influences, shaping their sound equally but very differently.

On September 24, Golden Animals will release their new album, Hear Eye Go,  via The Reverberation Appreciation Society in conjunction with Burger Records. The album was recorded by Matt Boynton (MGMT, Kurt Vile) at Vacation Island Recordings, and by the band themselves at their own studio. Joe LaPorta (Foo Fighters, Beach House) mastered the album at The Lodge. Watch the video for “All Your Life” below.

NEW MUSIC: The Sudden Death Of Stars

the-sudden-death-of-stars

“Free and Easy” is the first single off the debut album by French psych revivalists The Sudden Death Of Stars. Twangy guitar riffs, tamborines, nuanced sitars and ’60s organ coast atop a tremolo-y bottom that touch on the sounds of the Velvet Underground, Byrds, Stones, Brian Jonestown Massacre and the lot. As it says on their bio: “Sudden Death of Stars distille un rock’n’roll nerveux, mélodique et psychédélique!” The album is brimming with retro psych jams that truly make this, for lack of better wording, seem like a lost classic. It’s just really, really good old sounding music. Kind of like a delicious, freshly-baked pie that tastes like grandma’s own.

Getting Up, Going Down is out now via Burger/Ample Play. Stream the full album via Bandcamp. LP purchase recommended.

NEW MUSIC: Holy Wave

holy-wave
Imagine the ideal soundtrack to one of those retro 70s surf films shot on an old Super 8. What you conjure up will likely sound something like Austin-based psych band Holy Wave. Just listen to the jam “Albuquerque Freakout”, which takes on that classic wobbly Texas psych sound with layers of surf riffs, tambourines and howling echoes beneath the stoney vocal lines. This imagery carries throughout Holy Wave’s Evil Hits, out now on Burger Records, with vinyl coming February 2013 in conjunction with the Reverberation Appreciation Society. The release compiles 5 tracks from their 2011 release Knife Hits with 5 tracks from this year’s The Evil Has Landed EP. Picture those gnarly waves and tune in.
