Greetings, friends! It is a great honor to once again present to you the lineup for our third annual run of year-end late-shows taking place once at Mercury Lounge in New York City. This year on December 29 we’re psyched to present the combination of Invisible Familiars (essentially the band behind Sean Lennon’s The Ghost of a Sabertooth Tiger) along with Frank LoCastro. The following night on December 30, we’ll welcome back Real Estate side-project Alex Bleeker and the Freaks for their second year in a row. Supporting the Freaks will be Shorts, one of our favorite new acts on the scene which features current and former members of Woodsman and Real Estate. Both shows kick off around 11PM and will feature Dog Gone Presents and guest DJ sets to be announced in the coming weeks.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 12PM Eastern Time via the Mercury Lounge website. Previous years have sold-out so be sure to get your tickets in advance to avoid missing out.

Souljazz Orchestra – “Kelen Ati Leen”

The_Souljazz_Orchestra

In September, Strut Records released the new LP by the Ottawa-based Souljazz Orchestra, titled Solidarity. The album is an eclectic collaborative album featuring a range of artists from Canada’s vibrant underground afro-jazz scene, including Senegalese-Canadian artist Élage M’baye, Brazilian-Canadian singer-songwriter Rômmel Teixeira Ribeiro, and Jamaican-Canadian vocalist Slim Moore. Rooted in rhythmically rich musical traditions of the past, the Souljazz Orchestra blend the boundaries of soul, jazz and tropical styles with a new set of heavyweight songs, unified by an underlying message of positive social change. Check out the song “Kelen Ati Leen” below and pick up the full album here.

Tonight, the Souljazz Orchestra takes the stage at the Studio at Webster Hall alongside our good friends in Zongo Junction. We highly recommend you check it out.

Video: Tim Kuhl – “Indigo Blue” & Rockaway Hurricane Relief

Tim Kuhl is one of the finest drummers/percussionists I’ve had the pleasure of knowing during my time in New York. Part of the extended family of musicians that includes Superhuman Happiness, the band formerly known as Minerva Lions (of which he was/is the drummer), Thought, Beyondo, Knights on Earth and so on, Tim has plucked a group of these immensely talented musicians for his own self-titled project. The group features Mr. Kuhl on drums, Jared Samuel on double bass, Grey McMurray on guitar, Rick Parker on trombone, Joshua Valleau on accordion, and Philip Sterk on dobro.

On a late August weekend, these fine musicians made their way down to the Far Rockaway area of New York to film a video for their new song “Indigo Blue.” Just two short months later, the area was completely devastated by hurricane Sandy, leaving many people who live in the Rockaways in dire need of immediate help. Watch the video and read how you can help those in need below.

Pick up Tim’s new album St Helena via Bandcamp.
